Types of Injectables: Which Is Right for You?

If you’re contemplating cosmetic injectables, there is a lot to consider. While they’ve become a lot more common, injectables are not a one-size-fits-all solution. At Blue Ridge Dermatology, we offer a variety of cosmetic injectables. There is a right fit for everyone depending on their cosmetic goals, skin type, age, etc. Here are some of the injectables we offer:

BOTOX®

BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most popular cosmetic treatment in the United States. It is a Botulinum toxin type A injectable mainly used to smooth dynamic wrinkles, which are wrinkles that occur as a result of daily facial expressions. Botox injectables are very popular among adult patients looking to create an overall more youthful appearance. According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, the most commonly treated areas are glabellar lines (frown lines), “crow’s feet” eye area, forehead creases, corners of the mouth, and wrinkles on the chin.

This type of injectable is low-risk, as well as low on the pain scale. Your provider will use a topical anesthetic to numb the injection area beforehand. You may feel a slight pinch during the injection, as the needle is very thin.

If you’re looking for immediate results and a low-maintenance injectable, this might not be the right choice for you. The injectable usually reaches its full potential about 3 to 7 days after initial treatment. Also, the results from BOTOX® typically last 3 to 6 months, so you’ll need to schedule routine maintenance visits for an optimal outcome.

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers

Hyaluronic Acid is a key hydration ingredient for dermatologists. Your skin naturally produces it on its own, but a HA injectable is an extra boost to keep the skin plump and youthful. There are many FDA-approved HA fillers. Blue Ridge Dermatology offers JUVÉDERM®, Restylane® products, and Revance RHA®.

  • JUVÉDERM®

This type of injectable can be used for a variety of cosmetic purposes. In addition to BOTOX, it is one of the most common dermal fillers utilized. It is used to increase the volume of your cheeks, smooth or plump lips, and fill wrinkles or fine lines. JUVÉDERM® offers a variety of different formulas based on your needs. Results from these injectables can last anywhere from 9 months to 2 years, depending on which formula you choose. A standout quality of this injectable is that you see full results immediately, whereas other types don’t show results for days following the procedure.

  • Restylane®

Similar to JUVÉDERM®, this injectable works to add volume and fullness to specific areas. However, these two differ because Restylane is more cohesive and stays where it has been placed, whereas JUVÉDERM® diffuses into the tissues. We offer four different formulas of Restylane® products, each targeting a different facial feature.

    • Restylane® Kyss: Lip filler (results typically last up to a year)
    • Restylane® Defyne: Targets laugh lines and enhance chin projection
    • Restylane® Lyft: Correct volume loss and treat face and hand wrinkles
    • Restylane® Refyne: Soften laugh lines
  • Revance RHA®

This HA injectable imitates the natural hyaluronic acid produced in your skin. If you’re looking for a more natural-looking cosmetic injectable, this might be the right fit for you. Our practice offers RHA 2, RHA 3, and RHA 4.

Dysport®

Another more natural option for those seeking cosmetic filler is Dysport®. One of the most common concerns we hear from patients is whether they will lose the ability to form facial expressions after dermal fillers. This injectable is proven to help smooth moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows without limiting facial function. Dysport® has a similar lasting power to BOTOX®, but their differences don’t go unnoticed. They each have their own distinct formula; Dysport is known to spread a bit more once injected, while Botox stays in more targeted areas like forehead lines and crow’s feet.

Kybella®

If you’re looking to target your “double chin” non-surgically, Kybella® is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment for fat reduction. This injectable contains deoxycholic acid, which breaks down fat cells on contact for isolated removal of a fat pocket. The treatment, on average, takes about 20 minutes; a thin needle performs multiple injections underneath the chin. For best results, we recommend 2 to 4 treatments. Results from Kybella are permanent unless you experience significant weight gain.

Cosmetic injectables are an excellent option for altering facial features without surgery, and with all the various options, there’s bound to be one that suits you best. If you have any further questions, contact us at (919)781-1050!
