The Cause of Acne

Acne can affect a person of any age, from newborn well into adulthood, although you most commonly hear of acne affecting teens and young adults. Acne is caused by a clogged skin pore. When your body sheds dead skin, the dead skin usually rises to the surface of the pore and is shed. However, when your body produces an overabundance of sebum, an oil, it can cause the dead skin cells to stick together and remain in the pore. This causes the pore to become clogged, resulting in acne.

At times, bacteria from your skin can also make their way into the clogged pore. Bacteria find favorable conditions inside the pore and begin to multiply, causing the pore to become irritated (appearing red and inflamed). If the bacteria makes its way deep enough under the skin, a nodule or acne cyst can appear.

Signs You May Be Suffering From Acne

Although most often people consider acne to be on the face, it can also appear on the back, chest, shoulders, neck, upper arms, and buttocks. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms below, you may be dealing with acne. Acne can appear in a variety of methods, such as:

  • Cysts
  • Whiteheads
  • Papules
  • Pimples (also known as pustules)
  • Blackheads
  • Nodules

FAQs

Most frequent questions and answers about our acne treatments at Blue Ridge Dermatology

Many patients come to us after trying multiple over-the-counter products without getting the results they hoped for. While some mild acne can improve with nonprescription treatments, persistent or worsening acne often benefits from professional care.

You may benefit from seeing a dermatologist if:

  • Your acne has not improved after consistent use of over-the-counter products
  • You have painful or deep breakouts
  • Your acne is leaving scars or dark marks
  • Your breakouts are affecting your confidence
  • You continue to experience acne as an adult
  • Your acne frequently returns after improving
  • You are unsure which products or treatments are right for your skin

Treating acne early can make a significant difference. Our goal at Blue Ridge Dermatology is to help you achieve clearer skin while reducing inflammation and preventing long-term skin changes.

For some patients, acne improves over time. However, many people continue experiencing acne well beyond their teenage years. Adult acne is common and can develop even in people who had clear skin earlier in life.

Waiting for acne to resolve on its own may allow ongoing inflammation to damage the skin and increase the risk of:

  • Acne scars
  • Dark spots after breakouts heal
  • Persistent redness
  • Recurring breakouts

The good news is that acne is highly treatable. With the right combination of skincare, medications, and dermatologist-guided treatments, many patients achieve significant improvement.

At Blue Ridge Dermatology, we create treatment plans based on your skin, your lifestyle, and your goals—not a one-size-fits-all approach.

The best acne treatment is different for every patient. The right approach depends on the type of acne you have, how severe your breakouts are, your skin type, your previous treatments, and whether hormones or other factors are contributing.

Depending on your needs, we may recommend:

  • Prescription topical medications to unclog pores and reduce inflammation
  • Medications that target acne-causing bacteria
  • Hormonal acne treatments for appropriate patients
  • Oral medications for moderate to severe acne
  • Isotretinoin (Accutane®) for certain cases of severe or treatment-resistant acne
  • Treatments to address acne scars after active acne is controlled

During your appointment, we take the time to understand your concerns and explain your options. Our goal is to create a realistic, effective treatment plan that helps you achieve healthier, clearer skin.

At Blue Ridge Dermatology, we treat acne by looking beyond the surface of your skin. While many products focus only on drying out pimples, effective acne treatment requires understanding why your breakouts are happening and choosing therapies that address the underlying causes.

During your visit, we evaluate several factors, including:

  • The type of acne you have
  • The severity and location of your breakouts
  • Your skin type and sensitivity
  • Your previous acne treatments
  • Whether hormones or other medical factors may be contributing

Depending on your individual needs, acne treatment may include prescription creams or gels, oral medications, hormonal therapies, or isotretinoin for more severe cases.

For some patients, a combination approach works best. For example, we may recommend treatments that help prevent clogged pores while also reducing inflammation and preventing new breakouts from developing.

Our goal is to create a treatment plan that fits your lifestyle and helps you achieve long-term improvement—not just temporary results.
